I’m going to participate in the Candidates’ Tournament in Iekaterinburg after Teimur Radjabov’s withdrawal! Here’s a short article because I suddenly find myself in time trouble \ud83d\ude42 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nIt all started on Wednesday, when I\nwas coming back from a few days vacation in New York. FIDE contacted\nme to tell me that there was a possibility that one of the qualifiers\nwould not participate in the Candidates Tournament, without telling\nme who, nor why. According to the rules, I was the first substitute.\nFriday morning, after Teimour’s forfeit was announced, I was\nofficially invited to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nOf course, it was a big surprise for\nme, even though I had read Teimour’s statement after his World Cup\nvictory, questioning his participation in the Candidates. I also knew\nthat the coronavirus epidemic could disrupt things at any time. But\nstill, I didn’t expect anyone to withdraw at all, especially so close\nto the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nObviously, I’m delighted to have this\nopportunity, even if that’s not how I originally wanted to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nI will arrive in Iekaterinburg on\nMarch 12. My priority between now and the start of the tournament is\nto get everything in place logistically as quickly as possible so\nthat I can concentrate on the chess prep. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAlthough I\u2019m in at such a short\nnotice, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so I’m certainly\nnot going to be a picky eater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nMy goal is March 17, the day of the\nfirst round – against Caruana… It’s up to me to focus on chess to\nbe ready that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
