It\u2019s the second time the Bundesliga gathers in the main room of the Berlin Maritim Hotel, very close to the center town. With sixteen teams around playing the last three rounds of the year\u2019s championship, it can be said that this long weekend was the culmination of the year, a kind of huge chess party. In sporting terms, we (Baden-Baden) began the final weekend head to head with Solingen, with the hope of winning this long_distance affair in one of the three rounds.

\nThis time, Levon Aronian was there, and I played second board. I knew I would begin with white against our most difficult opponent, Hockenheim.<\/p>\n

Facing England #2 David Howell (2699), I repeated the same variation against the Berlin than the one I chose against Jakovenko at the Sharjah leg of the Grand Prix FIDE<\/a> (article in french). It\u2019s barely anything, but I somehow had the feeling that I kept the initiative, notably when he had to push 19\u2026h4, letting the pawn as a potential weakness in the long run. I then got a rook and opposite-coloured bishops endgame a pawn up.<\/p>\n

This position is certainly holdable for black, but as usual, David didn\u2019t have much time left, and didn\u2019t anticipate 42.g3!, with the idea 42\u2026Bxh3 43.gxh4, which leads to a rook ending probably still drawn, but clearly very difficult to defend. That\u2019s the path he chose, but I must confess that as black, I would have rather chosen 42\u2026hxg3+ 43.Kxg3, even if the defense is less easy than it looks, despite the potential passed c pawn ; indeed, white will have two of them, passed pawns ! Just afterwards, in the rook endgame which arose right after move 40, David used all his time trying to find a clearcut draw, which forced him to play the remainder of the game on the 30-second increment.
\nTherefore, he immediately erred with 47\u2026Kd5?, which allows the winning 48.Rh2!, although the draw was there ; but one had to find 47\u2026Rh1+! 48.Rh2 (48.Kg4 Kd5 49.Kg5 c4 and black\u2019s counterplay comes too fast) 48\u2026Rxh2+ 49.Kxh2 c4 50.h6 c3 51.h7 c2 52.h8=Q c1=Q 53.Qb8+ Ke7 54.Qxb5 Qc2+ 55.Kg3 Qxa2, with a theoretically drawn Q+b vs Q endgame, but nevertheless nightmarish to defend ! Unfortunately, as soon as the next move, I also blundered by playing 49.h6? without exchanging pawns on c4 ; but 49.bxc4 was a clearcut win after 49\u2026bxc4 50.h6 c3 51.h7 Rf8 52.Kg4 Rh8 53.Kf5 Kd4 (53\u2026c2 54.Rd2+) 54.Kg6 and after both rook sacrifices, white\u2019s a pawn runs.<\/p>\n

What I did forget in the game, is that 53\u2026b4! worked fine for black, instead of the move he chose, 53\u2026Kd3? which happens to lose irremediably. [58\u2026c1=Q? 59.Rxc1 Kxc1 60.Kd4 +-] 59.Kd4 Kxb3 60.Kd3 Kb2 61.Kd2 b3 62.Rg1 Ka2 63.Kc1 Ka1! with a positional draw) 54\u2026Kd3 55.Rxb4 c2 56.Rc4 Ra8 57.Rc7 Kd2 58.Kg7 I thought it was over, but there is a resource with 58\u2026Ra7! 59.Rxa7 c1=Q 60.h8=Q Qc3+! with a perpetual check on the triangle c3-c8-h3 ! Fortunately, David didn\u2019t see this resource either, and I was able to convert without much further difficulty.<\/p>\n

The next day, against the Hungarian GM Adam Horvath (2486), I got what I wanted in the 6.Be2 Najdorf, including a c5 Knight against a white-squared bishop, alongside a queenside pressure.<\/p>\n

From memory, I regretted playing 35\u2026Rd8 instead of 35\u2026Rc7, which would have prevented him from regrouping with Re2-e3, as after 35\u2026Rc7 36.Re2? Nxb3! 37.Rb1 (37.Rb2 Ra7!) 37\u2026Ra7 38.Qb2 Nd4!. Nevertheless, I still managed to win a pawn after the time control : but with all the pawns on the same wing, the technical task to convert is often huge, the more so as I couldn\u2019t – or wasn\u2019t able to – keep all six heavy pieces on the board, and had to quickly exchange a pair of rooks. Then I could have chosen to enter the Queen endgame, but I already had the opportunity to defend it, and at the time, it didn\u2019t look so terrible to me. So I took my chances in the rook ending, and luckily, he missed the opportunity to liquidate into a trivial draw by 63.f4! Rxg3 (63\u2026exf4 64.Kxf4) 64.fxe5 fxe5 65.Kxe5.<\/p>\n

Then we had this rook endgame with e and f pawns against f, which is not so easy to handle in practice, with thirty seconds per move. White must pay attention to a lot of things ; to my king which turns around the board, to my pawn duo on e5-f4 which creates new opportunities\u2026 If I were him, I would have stopped the king\u2019s entrance by 79.Rd3 (instead of 79.Ra6+), but the fact is that there\u2019s always a gap beetween the knowledge of a drawn ending, and the practical ability to prove it, move by move, under the clock\u2019s pressure !<\/p>\n

So my king was allowed a long journey through the board, up to h2, and I thought I was winning after 88\u2026Rg2+. This is actually the case after 89.Kf5? Kg3! but, final twist of this endgame, 89.Kh4! was still holding the draw for him !
\nThis meant a second win in a row from an objectively drawn, but practically difficult, endgame.<\/p>\n

The last game, as usual in Bundesliga a morning game, didn\u2019t give the expected result. German GM Ginsburg (2428) took quite a lot of time, but was rather precise throughout the game. In the opening, I decided to replicate the King\u2019s Indian scheme chosen by Carlsen against Caruana in their latest encounter at the Grenke tournament, when white puts his pawn on e3. Fress\u2019 wry smile during the game made me understand that the provocative manoeuver \u2026Nc6-b4 must have been an impro from Magnus, which is what I already suspected\u2026 But following Magnus on those grounds was also a bit of an improvisation on my part !<\/p>\n

In the final position after 26\u2026Bb3, I understood that white was going to play 27.Qc3, then Rac1 and Bc4 with full equality. Therefore I didn\u2019t insist and I offered a draw.<\/p>\n
